Historical notes
Did you know how the garment that we all now know as Polo shirt was born? In the past, tennis was played with clothing that we would define as totally inappropriate as it was terribly uncomfortable for both male and female sports. At one point, in 1926, a certain Lacoste (does this name tell you something?) set himself the goal of facilitating comfort during tennis competitions and created a strange t-shirt with collar and buttons: he had invented the polo shirt as we know it today. A garment that combines the comfort and strength of a sports garment with the elegance of the lines (with or without small crocodile on the chest).
Polo shirt nowadays
But let’s come to the present day, where polo shirt is a garment used in everyday life and all over the world: what exactly is a polo shirt made of?
- The fabric used in most cases is 100% CO Piquet, very comfortable. Of course, there are a large number of possible variations, such as the addition of elastane to the Piquet fabric, the use of jersey fabric, and more.
- The weight and the specific characteristics of the fabric itself are decided according to the needs of each of our clients, depending on whether the elegant side or the sporty side should prevail, or a right mix between them.
In any case, all the fabrics we use on behalf of our customers are italian and have the highest quality standards (see T-shirts).
A few brief hints of curiosities about the way our polo shirts are made
One of the first steps consists in choosing fabric specific characteristics, that is: composition, weight, finishing; usually when we ship the prototype we also ship various fabric swatches with different characteristics along with it, in order to give client the opportunity to choose the fabric that he judges more suitable for his brand. After having made the choice, we start with the creation of the prototype, through which it is possible to define the main elements of the garment, such as the fit and the type of finishes that will characterize the garment itself.

For example, if we consider the collar and the cuffs, they are most often made in for example, if we consider collar and cuffs, they are most often made in knitted rib and, of course, their color tone must match as much as possible that of the piquet fabric used. To this purpose, to achieve maximum precision, we have both the pique fabric and the knitted rib yarn dyed together. In addition, again with regard to the knitted rib, there are various types: in solid color like the classic Lacoste; with stripes (or decorative motifs) in the same color as Tom Ford; with jacquard processing like Versace; etc. Of course we decide with the customer what type can be more appropriate to use. In reality, all decisions are taken with client approval.
